چکیده

Iron deûciency anemia (IDA) and beta-thalassemia trait (BTT) are the common causes of microcytic hypochromic anaemia. Several discrimination indices have been introduced to discriminate quickly these similar entities via parameters obtained from automated cell counter. The purpose of the study was to compare the value of two discrimination indices, red cell distribution width index (RDWI) and red cell distribution width (RDW) in differentiation of BTT and IDA. This study consists of 57 cases of BTT and 72 cases of IDA. Severe anaemia (<7.0 gm/dl) had been excluded because these cases are not confused with BTT cases in practice. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values and Youden’s index of both indices in differentiation of BTT and IDA had been calculated. RDWI appears to be reliable and useful index for differentiation of iron deficiency anaemia and beta thalassaemia trait. Again RDWI is better than RDW in differentiating BTT from IDA.

Evaluation of Twenty Four Discriminant Indices for Differentiating Beta-Thalassemia Trait from Iron Deficiency Anemia in Egyptians

Background: Many Red Blood Cell (RBC) indices have been developed based on mathematical formulae to discriminate beta-thalassemia trait (βTT) from iron deficiency anemia (IDA). The latter two conditions represent the most common causes of microcytic hypochromic anemia in Egypt. This study aimed To evaluate the diagnostic reliability of 24 published discriminant indices for differentiating βTT f...

Differentiation of beta thalassemia trait from iron deficiency anemia by hematological indices

OBJECTIVE We aimed at finding out reliable parameter in the differentiation of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and beta-thalassemia trait (β-TT) in the adult population subjected to Saudi Arabian Premarital Screening Program. METHODS A total of 620 adults (age range 21-36 years) reported during February 2012 to November 2012. Tests for serum iron and ferritin were carried out in individuals show...

Comparison of red cell distribution width and a red cell discriminant function incorporating volume dispersion for distinguishing iron deficiency from beta thalassemia trait in patients with microcytosis.

The red cell distribution width (RDW), and another red cell discriminant function incorporating RDW (MCV2 x RDW/Hgb x 100) were determined in a group of 30 patients with iron deficiency anemia, 30 patients with beta thalassemia trait, and 30 normal subjects. Both RDW and (MCV2 x RDW/Hgb x 100) mean values were significantly higher in iron deficiency anemia than in beta thalassemia trait (p < 0....

Thalassaemia trait and pregnancy.

The haematological variables, haematinic state, and placental function of more than 2000 pregnant women, heterozygous for either alpha- or beta-thalassaemia genes, were examined during pregnancy. Four features emerged. Firstly, it was possible by discriminant function analysis of haematological variables to distinguish in pregnant patients between the anaemia caused by thalassaemia trait and th...

Diagnostic reliability check of red cell indices in differentiating Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) from Beta Thalassemia Minor (BTT)

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia and beta-thalassemia trait are the two most common causes of hypochromic microcytic anemia. There are some discriminating functions (DFs) formula to differentiate these two conditions based on RBC's indices which would be compared the validity of the 14 various indices in this study. Correspond...
